Abstract

1394417 Boring earth &c GILBERT GRAY & CO PTY LTD 4 June 1973 [9 June 1972] 26592/73 Heading E1F Apparatus suitable for use in obtaining a core sample in loose or unconsolidated material comprises a sample-tube casing 12 and a sample tube 20 contained therein, the sample when contained within the tube 20 is retained therein by a closure 15 which is actuated to seal the end of the tube 20 by a withdrawing movement of the sample tube with respect to the casing 12. The closure 15 comprises spring- loaded jaws and the withdrawing movement is governed by means of spring-loaded retaining pins 27, 29 of an adaptor 31 cooperating with a slot 13 in the casing 12. The closure 15 forms part of a separable unit (16), Fig 4 (not shown), which is retained within the casing tube 12 by a screw-on nose piece 17. In an alternative embodiment (not shown), the sample tube closure jaws are affixed to a further tube within the casing, and are held open by slotting into an annular slot within the forward end portion of the casing. In use the apparatus is inserted into the material through a hollow auger (not shown) attached to auger head 5, the head having spring-loaded closing jaws 7. The adaptor 31 is provided with a valve 22 to permit egress of gasses and/or liquids from the sample tube during sampling.
