Abstract
1283309 Surgical sampling apparatus V H HYDEN and F V HASSELBLAD 28 Aug 1970 [15 June 1970] 41480/70 Heading A5R Apparatus for taking a sample from an internal organ comprises a hollow tubular handle 1 with an elongate piston 2 sealingly, movably engaged in the handle 1, and a cannula 14 removably, coaxially attached at one end of the handle 1, the bore of the cannula 14 being in communication with the interior of the handle. An elongate slot 8 is formed in the wall of the handle 1 and a slider and cover 5, 6 is provided on the outside of the handle connected via the slot 8 with the piston 2 by a spring clip (7), Fig. 2 (not shown) engaged in an annular groove 19 of the piston. One part 13 of a bayone fitting is screwed around the outside of an end portion 11 of the handle I, the part 13 adapted to cooperate with a mount at one end of the cannula 14, a sealing gasket 12 being provided between the parts 11, 13. A solid needle 16 is rigidly, releasably engaged coaxially with the piston 2 and with the cannula 14, by means of a resilient tang formed by bending one end of the needle into a form as shown, which tang is then force-fitted into a blind axial bore (20), Fig. 5 (not shown), of the piston 2. In use, the cannula is introduced through the body into the desired spot with the piston in the position shown, the needle 16 extending to just beyond the tip 15 of the cannula 14. The sliding assembly 5, 6 is then withdrawn withdrawing the piston 2 and the needle 16, causing a sample to be drawn up into the cannula after the needle 16. An aperture 9, communicating with the inside of the handle 1 and with the atmosphere, is normally sealed by the body of the piston 2, as shown, but is uncovered after a certain distance of sliding, thereby placing the interior of the cannula at atmospheric pressure and ceasing the suction effect. The limit of sliding of the piston 2 is defined by the spring (7) engaging the ends of the slot 8.
