Abstract

1399925 Reconditioning lubricants DOW CHEMICAL CO 4 Sept 1972 [9 Sept 1971] 40887/72 Heading C5E A non-aqueous lubricant that has been used in metal-working and contains colloidal solids in suspension, is reconditioned for re-use by bringing it into contact with an alkali-metal hydroxide in the presence of a monohydric aliphatic alcohol that is a solvent for the hydroxide, to reduce the acid number to less than 0À12, and then clarifying by sedimentation or filtration. As shown, oil used in a rolling mill 13 is collected in a sump 15 where larger particles settle out before it is pumped to tank 16. Here, a monohydric alkanol is added and dissolves a quantity of the KOH contained in a wire-mesh tube 18. The neutralized oil is pumped through a filter or centrifuge 23 to reservoir 24 for recirculation. Alternatively, the alkali may be added as a solution in the alkanol.
