Abstract

1399840 Non-refillable bottle fitments; gravity valve BETTS & CO Ltd 16 Oct 1972 [16 July 1971] 33613/71 Headings B8D and B8T A non-refillable bottle fitment comprises a two-part plastics housing 15 and 16, a one-way gravity-operated valve 17 resting on a valve seat 24 when the bottle is upright to prevent illicit refilling, and a hollow boss 28, which limits movement of the valve away from the seat when the bottle is tilted and which is carried by a plurality of resilient spirally-arranged struts 29 extending from the bore of the upper housing part whereby the boss may be depressed inwardly to hold the valve against its seat on application of a screw-threaded closure cap 30 to the fitment. As shown, the fitment and an edge flange 32 of the cap are secured to the bottle by a crimped or spun metal band 33. The cap has a thinned section 31 which fractures when the cap is unscrewed. The boss slidably engages an upstanding peg 22 of the lower housing part, along which the valve slides. The peg is joined by radial spokes 21 to a surrounding annulus 18 of the lower housing part to define arcuate pouring and air inlet openings 25. In a simplified embodiment, Figs. 1 and 2 (not shown), the valve 6 has a stem 7, which engages in the hollow boss.
