Abstract

1399802 Trench-digging apparatus SAIPEM SpA 5 Jan 1973 [14 Jan 1972] 838/73 Heading E1F Equipment for digging a trench in a submarine bed comprises a rotary cutting device 1 having a plurality of blades 2 at which is directed a plurality of nozzles 7 through which water may be expelled to clean-the blades, a hollow shaft 11 communicating with the cutter, and an ejector 26 communicating with the shaft to extract material away from the cutting device. The shaft 11 is supported in sleeves 14, 15 to which are connected arms 16, 17, and is rotated by electric motor 19. Several pairs of such digging equipment are used on apparatus for laying a cable or pipe 44, Fig 4, being disposed with cutters 46 below the pipe and the support arms 16, 17 being pivoted on a central member 32 of a carrier adapted to straddle the pipe. The carrier is guided and the pipe supported by rollers (61), (64), Fig 9 (not shown), the rollers (61) being carried by arms (60) rigid with the carrier and the rollers (64) by arms (63) pivoted to the carrier and adjustable by jacks (67).
