Abstract

1398563 Strengthening concrete beams R TAYLOR 28 July 1973 36038/73 Heading E1W An existing reinforced or prestressed concrete beam is strengthened by applying a standard hot rolled steel channel 1 to the existing beam soffit so that the channel forms the new soffit of the beam, the channel being held in place by and made composite with the beam concrete by transverse bolts 3 passing through holes drilled or otherwise formed in the flanges of the channel and in the web of the concrete beam. The gaps between the steel channel and the concrete beam are filled with grout. When the soffit of the existing beam has been subject to spalling so exposing and weakening existing reinforcing rods addition bar or strand reinforcement may be incorporated within the channel during application to the concrete.
