Abstract

1398233 Centreless grinding SUNDSTRAND SYRACUSE Inc 30 Jan 1974 [16 Feb 1973] 4219/74 Heading B3D A centreless grinding machine comprises a first hydraulic transmission having first and second hydraulic units 45, 46 for driving a grinding element 10, a second hydraulic transmission having first and second hydraulic units 50, 52 for driving a regulating wheel 20, and a pressure source 40 having output means 41, 42 drivingly connected to the first hydraulic units 45, 50 of both transmissions whereby the regulating wheel functions to assist the power source when the regulating wheel is functioning as a brake. The grinding element 10 may be a belt or, as described, a wheel on a shaft 11 coupled to the second unit 46 of the first transmission, the unit being in the form of a motor 46 connected by fluid lines 47, 48 to the first unit 45 such as a variable displacement swash plate pump driven by an output shaft 41 of the power source 40. The other output shaft 42 of the motor drives a similar pump 50 constituting the first unit of the second transmission. The pump 50 is connected by a line 51 to a motor 52 forming the second unit of the second transmission driving the regulating wheel 20. The first and second units 50, 52 of the second transmission are in series connection by lines 60, 61, 62 with further motors 53, 54 driving feed rolls 30, ... 33 for the workpiece 25 supported by a blade between the grinding and regulating wheels, the feed rolls and regulating wheel being mounted on inclined holes and the motors 52, 53, 54 being of variable displacement to compensate for wear of the components. During grinding, the regulating wheel and feed rolls function as brakes to retard the rotation of the workpiece and the energy imparted by the grinding wheel causes the units 52, 53, 54 to act as pumps and the unit 50 to act as a motor assisting the power source 40.
