Abstract

A hydraulic motor or pump unit for covering a wide range of torque and speed requirements comprises a radial ball piston motor or pump and a swash-plate motor or pump driving or driven by a common shaft 21, the ball piston motor being operational for high torque and low speed, and being rendered inoperative by holding its ball pistons 43 clear of its multi-lobed cam track 45 when the swash-plate motor is in operation for low torque and high speed. In the motor unit shown, shaft 21 carries a lathe chuck 5 for a work piece. A valve, Fig. 2 (not shown), controls the supply and return of pressure liquid to and from the ball piston motor, the valve also acting to connect a chamber 48 surrounding ball pistons 43 either to pressure or exhaust. When chamber 48 is pressurized and cylinders 41 are connected to low pressure or exhaust, ball pistons 43 are held clear of cam track 45 for operation of the swash-plate motor, the speed of which is adjusted by tilting swashplate 67. The motor unit is supplied by an electric motor-driven swash-plate pump of adjustable output. In Fig. 4 (not shown), the ball piston and swash-plate motors are on separate shafts coupled by gearing.
