Abstract
1397849 Manufacturing glass bodies SIEMENS AG 16 Aug 1973 [18 Aug 1972] 38854/73 Heading C1M A glass body is manufactured by forming a homogenous silicate melt containing lithium tetraborate and lithium sulphate; casting the melt; and allowing the cast melt to cool and form the desired body. Preferably 20-50 parts by weight of lithium sulphate per 100 parts of lithium tetraborate are used, the lithium salts acting as a deflocculant for the melt. The silicate may be cement powder or feldspar. The preferred tetraborate : sulphate : silicate weight ratio is 5 : 2 : 2. The melt is preferably formed by heating the constituents to 1050- 1200‹ C., e.g. in a crucible made of an alloy consisting of 95% by weight Pt and 5% by weight Au. The melt is preferably cast on to a press punch to form, e.g. a disc (in which case an iron moulding ring is used), the press surface being preheated to 350-410‹ C. The cast and pressed product (e.g. a disc) may be used as a sample for determination of the glass composition by X-ray fluorescence analysis.
