Abstract

1456478 Manufacturing a sealing glass INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP 23 May 1975 [5 Aug 1974] 22927/75 Heading C1M A sealing glass consisting essentially of (in weight per cent): PbO 66, B 2 O 3 14, SiO 2 2, Al 2 O 3 3À5, ZnO 10À5, CuO 2À5 and Bi 2 O 3 1À5; is made by (i) providing batch constituents in proportions suitable to form the said glass; (ii) heating the batch to melt it, while mixing, until the batch is at a temperature of 1080-1120‹ C.; (iii) maintaining the melt at said temperature for 3-3¢ hours; and (iv) cooling the melt until bubbling is inhibited (e.g. to 1060‹ C.). The batch materials may be melted in a platinum crucible. Preferably part of the batch is melted by heating to 750-850‹ C., and the melt held at this temperature while the balance of the batch is added in stages. After solidification of the melt, the glass formed may be annealed at 335‹ C. for about 15 minutes. The sealing glass is as described and claimed in Specification 1,421,510.
