Abstract

1,221,851. Glass ceramics. CARL-ZEISSSTIFTUNG, [trading as JENAER GLASWERK SCHOTT & GEN.]. 25 March, 1968 [29 March, 1967; 11 Nov., 1967], No. 14336/68. Heading C1M. A composition for the production of an opaque or transparent glass ceramic comprises the following constituents expressed as parts by weight: SiO 2 , 54À0-62À0; B 2 O 3 , 0-6À4; Al 2 O 3 , 14À5-23À0; Li 2 O, 1À5-2À9; CaO, 0-1À9; BaO, 0-7À0; MgO, 0-7À5; ZnO, 0-12À0; P 2 O 5 , 0-8À0; TiO 2 , 0À6-1À8; ZrO 2 , 1À8-4À0; AS 2 O 3 and/or Sb 2 O 3 , 0À15-1À0, in which the content CaO+BaO+MgO+ZnO is 7À5 to 19 and P 2 O 5 +TiO 2 +ZrO 2 is 3.6 to 11.6, the balance, if any, being one or more compatible constituents. The opaque glass ceramic may be prepared by heat-treatment of a glass obtained by fusion of the above composition and comprises two or more crystalline phases of #- eucryptite solid solution, spodumene, zinc spinel and celsian. A particular process comprises fusing a specified glass composition and heat-treating the resultant glass ceramic as follows:-(a) heating up from room temperature to 720Œ20‹ C. at 2-6‹ C. / min.; (b) maintaining the glass ceramic for 2 hours at 720Œ20‹ C.; (c) further raising the temperature to 820Œ 30‹ C. at 2-6‹ C./min.; (d) maintaining at 820Œ30‹ C. for 3 hours; (e) cooling to ambient temperature at less than 4‹ C. per minute. A transparent glass ceramic containing only #-eucryptite solid solution as crystalline phase is obtained by a similar heat treatment of a glass obtained by fusion of the composition in parts by weight:-SiO 2 , 60-62; Al 2 O 3 , 21-23; P 2 O 5 , 0-1À0; Li 2 O, 2À6-2À9; ZnO, 5À0-8À5; MgO, 0-20; BaO, 0-2À0; CaO, 0-1À5; TiO 2 , 1À5-1À8; ZrO 2 , 1À8-2À5; As 2 O 3 and/or Sb 2 O 3 0À5-1À0, in which SiO 2 +Al 2 O 3 +P 2 O 5 is 82-85; ZnO+MgO+BaO+CaO is 8À0-11À5, the ratio ZnO/MgO # 3.5, TiO 2 +ZrO 2 is 3.6-4.3, the ratio ZrO 2 /TiO 2 is 1À0-1À7.
