Abstract

1,151,860. Solid glass articles. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. 3 Nov., 1966 [21 Oct., 1965], No. 44661/65. Heading C1M. A solid article of a glass-ceramic material includes, as major constituents making up 90- 100% of the total weight, (a) ZnO 25-57%, B 2 O 3 10-58%, SiO 2 up to 38% and Al 2 O 3 up to 29% or (b) ZnO 45-68%, B 2 O 3 31-55% and SiO 2 0-12%, or (c) ZnO 22-68%, B 2 O 3 31- 58% and Al 2 O 3 0-29% the balance, if any consisting of (d) at least one of Li 2 O, Na 2 O 3 , K 2 O 0-5% but not exceeding 5% in combined total, (e) at least one of MgO, CuO, BaO 0- 10% but not exceeding 10% in combined total, (f) ZrO 2 0-5% and (g) P 2 O 5 0-6%. The article may be made by a process including the steps of melting batch materials to form a glass having constituents according to the above ranges and heat-treating the resulting glass to devitrify it, preferably heat-treating in two stages. In another embodiment the molten glass is cast into water, ground to a powder, the powder formed to the shape of the article and the article fired so as to fuse the powder and devitrify the glass product. The powder may be mixed with a binder which is burnt off at a lower temperature.
