Abstract
1397773 Electric cable jointing BRITISH INSULATED CALLENDERS CABLES Ltd 1 Aug 1973 [1 Aug 1972] 35924/72 Heading H2C As a preparation for jointing, the outer tubular conductor of an electrical power distribution cable is opened by first making opposing helical cuts 1, 2 of, say, about 1¢ turns and 60 degrees pitch relative to the cable axis joined by longitudinal cuts 3, 4 all the cuts being just less than the sheath thickness. The resulting cut around strip 5 is torn out and the edge 8 raised. Helical strips connected by the strip 10 are unwound by tearing back along cuts 1, 2 thus giving access to the core. Connections can be made to the sheath near the corners of the strip 10. Cuts 3, 4 may alternatively be helical with a small pitch angle and the main helical cuts 1, 2 may have pitch angles less than 60 degrees. At a pitch angle of 60 degrees the conductance of the unwound strip is 50% of the uncut sheath.
