Abstract

1396414 Moulding centrifuge rotors AVCO CORP 21 July 1972 [2 Sept 1971] 34332/72 Heading B5A [Also in Division B2] A centrifuge rotor is reinforced by a plurality of twins of a material in the form of one or more resin-impregnated filaments positioned around its periphery. The Fig. 1, a boron filament from a supply reel 46 is passed through a bath 44 of curable epoxy resin and through a reciprocating guide 28 and is wound on a rotating spindle 20. The resin is allowed to cure to a hardened state to form a sleeve 48, Fig. 2, which is telescoped over the periphery of the rotor 12. The filament may alternatively be impregnated with the resin after winding. The filament may be wound on various spindles to preform a series of coaxial interfitting sleeves which are telescoped over the rotor. In another embodiment, the filament is wound directly on the rotor itself. In a modification, the material used consists of graphite filaments in an epoxy resin matrix.
