Abstract
1276356 Turbomachine blades ROLLS-ROYCE Ltd 21 Sept 1970.[18 July 19691 36285/69 Heading FIT [Also in Division B8 A compressor rotor blade is made by mounting a core member 10 of a mouldable material in a chuck 14, rotating the latter and winding fibrous material in alternate layers 15, 16 along helical paths of opposite hand about the core 10. The blade is then removed from the chuck 14 and moulded to its final shape. The core 10 may be of epoxy resin reinforced with fibres 11, 12, 13 of carbonaceous material, such as polyacrylonitrile, which extend in three orthogonal directions. Alternatively the core 10 may be of carbonaceous or metallic material and the fibres 11, 12, 13 of boron or silicon. The layers 15, 16 are wound in tape form from traversing bobbins 20, 21 respectively, the tapes being of epoxy resin reinforced with carbonaceous fibrous material. A layer of tape 22 is wound on to the blade root between each layer 15, 16. Additional support for the blade during the winding operation may be provided by a tip chuck.
