Abstract

901,075. Compressor blades. ROLLSROYCE Ltd. May 8, 1961 [May 12, 1960], No. 16870/60. Class 110 (3). A compressor blade formed of resin-bonded fibrous material has a proportion of longitudinal, i.e. spanwise fibres, and a proportion of lateral fibres, at least some of the latter forming an outer surface layer on the root of the blade. By the term " lateral fibres " is meant fibres which are disposed at an angle of 45 degrees or greater to the longitudinal axis of the blade. The blade shown in Fig. 1 is a rotor blade formed of resin-bonded fibre glass, and comprises longitudinally arranged glass fibres 13 folded round an insert 12, which may be a reinforced thermosetting plastic, so as to form a root portion 11 and an aerofoil portion 10. The glass fibres are bonded by an epoxy resin 14. On the outer portion of the root, on top of the longitudinal fibres 13, one or more layers of lateral fibres 15 are bonded. In Figs. 2 and 3 internal layers of lateral fibres 16, 17 are provided, these lateral fibres being covered by layers 18, 19 of longitudinal fibres, and being disposed uniformly of either side of the mean chord line. The lateral fibres can be disposed either normal to the longitudinal axis of the blade as shown in Fig. 2 or inclined at an angle of between 60 and 90 degrees, preferably 65 degrees, to the longitudinal axis. The longitudinal fibres may be disposed at an angle of 0 to 15 degrees to the longitudinal axes. The glass fibres are preferably of boro-silicate glass. If the blades have to withstand high-temperature phenolic type resins should be used, and for even higher temperatures inorganic type resins should be used.
