Abstract

775,816. Helicopter rotor blades; screw propellers. WARNKEN, E. P. March 3, 1955 [March 3, 1954], No. 6382/55. Classes 4 and 114. [Also in Groups V and XXVI] An aerofoil blade, for example an aircraft propeller blade or a helicopter rotor blade, comprises a core of pro-stressed, substantially straight, resinbonded glass fibres extending substantially the length of the blade, and a root portion at one end of the blade. The glass fibres are preferably in the form of elongated rovings but they may be in the form of glass fibre fabric. The method of making a compressor blade in accordance with the invention is shown in Figs. 3 and 19. Lengths of resin-impregnated glass fibres 16 are folded double and a pin 17 is inserted through the fold, the fibres then being placed in the lower mould portion 18. The free or blade tip ends of the fibres are clamped at 19 and the fibres are stressed when the upper mould portion 26 is pressed downwardly causing the ends of the pin 17 to slide along the inclined grooves 22, 23. A plug 24<SP>1</SP> of resin-impregnated glass fibres is inserted in the space above the pin 17. While pressure is applied to the mould by the ram 26<SP>1</SP> the pre-stressed fibres are heated to cause curing of the resin, and the resin when cured holds the fibres in pre-stressed condition and forms a hard, smooth, infusible blade surface, The resin may be a phenol formaldehyde type or may be a suitable epoxy resin. In a second embodiment, the fibres are folded round a pin member as shown in Figs. 9 and 10, the pin member having a portion 41 of tear-drop shape and rib portions 42, 43, 44. The fibres and the pin are mounted in a mould as shown in Fig. 11, the fibres being pre-stressed by a clamp device 52. A moulding compound comprising resin and short staple glass fibres (about half-an-inch in length) is introduced into the mould through a gate 53 under a pressure of about 2¢ tons per square inch. Preferably both the elongated fibres and the short staple fibres are resin-coated or -impregnated. While under pressure, the blade is heated to set the resin and form a hard infusible blade mass. Another type of pin member is shown in Fig. 15, the resin-impregnated glass fibres being folded around a pin portion 66, the fibres and pin then being inserted in a mould as shown in Fig. 16. The fibres are pre-stressed by means of a clamp 78 attached to the free ends of the fibres and resin-impregnated short fibre glass staples are then injected into the mould.
