Abstract
778,685. Aerofoils. BRISTOL AIRCRAFT, Ltd. Feb. 16, 1955 [Nov. 20, 1953], No. 32240/53. Class 4. [Also in Group V] A cellular aerofoil or component part thereof consists of a onepiece moulding comprising at least one skin layer 34 with its surface formed to the aerofoil contour, at least one other layer 35 substantially co-extensive with the first and spaced therefrom over at least part of its area, each layer being composed of fibrous material bonded with thermoset resin and/or of metal, and a plurality of spanwise extending webs made of fibrous material bonded with thermoset resin, and presenting with the layers in chordwise section a substantially fully triangulated structure, the triangular cells in which can each be filled without distortion of the structure by a rigid core insertable into or withdrawable from the cell in a spanwise direction. In the all-moving tail plane described, of thin parallelogram crosssection, a further core is inserted part way into the moulding to form a socket with walls 38 for a mounting shaft 30. A further core leaves an aperture for receiving a rib 31 fast to the shaft to take up torque. In the case of a tapered wing, the outermost triangular cells end short of the tip. The layer 35 ends somewhat short in the chordwise direction of layer 34, and the surface is completed by leading and trailing portions 36 of resin bonded fibrous material. Phenolformaldehyde or polyester resins may be used. In manufacture, a two or more part mould is charged with the layers 34 and 35 and with triangular cores wrapped with fibrous material impregnated with uncured or partly cured thermosetting or hot setting resin. Any remaining space is filled with impregnated fibrous material, to a volume greater than that of the mould, so that when the mould parts are together, the charge is compressed. It is then heat cured. Alternatively, the charge may be of less volume than the mould, and after closing the mould, a liquid mixture comprising uncured or partly cured thermosetting resin is injected into the mould to a required moulding pressure. The mould may be raised to the curing temperature immediately before, during or after injection. Specifications 778,681 and 778,683 [Group V] are referred to.
