Abstract
1327246 Reinforcing golf-club shafts by winding NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP 22 Dec 1971 [22 Sept 1970] 45171/70 Heading B8G [Also in Division A6] A fibre-reinforced composite article, such as a golf-club shaft, includes a torsional stiffening layer 3 embraced by and bonded to an envelope of continuous parallel carbon fibre lengths 1. As shown in Fig. 1 the article also includes a core 2 which may be a braided glass sleeve which is drawn on to a tapered mandrel. The core 2 may alternatively be of polyurethane material, or a solid rod of resin-impregnated carbon fibre material. A ring 15, Fig. 4 is attached to one end of the braided core sleeve 2 and a tow of high modulus carbon fibres 3, Fig. 1 is wound helically thereon at an angle of 45 degrees to the axis to provide the torsional stiffening layer. The envelope 1 comprises low modulus carbon fibres which are attached to the ring 15 and are spread evenly around the shaft circumference by a distributer ring 19 having spokes 22 and removable retaining ring 21. A first section of the shaft is produced in a jig die assembly (5) (Fig. 3, not shown). The shaft assembly is immersed in a fast-setting polyester resin and the end is then withdrawn into the die (5) which is heated to cure the resin, pressure being applied in the die to exclude air pockets. After removal from this first die, the remaining portions of the envelope fibres are resin-impregnated and pulled into a second die 13, Fig. 4 by a cable 14 attached to the ring 15. A tube 16 of the die 13 imparts the desired taper to the shaft as it is pulled into it. The die is heated to cure the resin and the shaft is trimmed to size after removal from the die. In an alternative arrangement, the envelope 1 has a first portion (25) (Fig. 6, not shown) with fibres parallel to the axis and a second portion (26) with the fibres wound helically about the torsional stiffening means. The torsional stiffening means may alternatively comprise two layers of opposite helical winding of carbon, metal or glass fibres or a metal sleeve.
