Abstract

1330313 Shaft couplings BRITISH AIRCRAFT CORP Ltd 22 Sept 1971 [23 Sept 1970] 45375/70 Heading F2U A composite structure (e.g. a shaft) comprising a metal portion 11 (e.g. one at each end) having a part 14 of smoothly-continuous, non-circular section without concavity (e.g. as in Fig. 2), and a plastics (e.g. epoxy resin) portion 10 largely adjacent the portion 11 but also overlapping, with (e.g. helically) wound (e.g. carbon) filament reinforcement, the part 14, whereby torque can be transmitted. The metal portion may have a local enlargement 13 so that axial load can be transmitted. Apart from the part 14, the structure shown has a circular cross-section. The structure may be formed by winding resin wetted filament on a suitable mandrel with the metal portions attached, the mandrel being melted out of the structure after the resin has been cured.
