Abstract

In process for making continuous profiles of reinforced resin with an intrinsic curvature suitable for laying the profile helically about a cylindrical body dia. D. Continuous, resin impregnated filaments or wires are led onto a rotating mandrel having a helical surface channel corresponding in section to the cross-section of the required profile. The mandrel leads the wound-on profile through or past equipment for curing the matrix resin. the root dia. d of the channels in the mandrel are dependent on the length L of profile required to complete on turn of the profile around the body of dia. D, by the relationship 0.095 L2/D d 0.105 L2/D. Used esp. for making curved profiles from high tensile filaments of e.g. stainless steel, glass or carbon fibre bound by e.g. epoxy or polyester resin. Unlike press moulding, the rotating mandrel technique allows bonded filament profiles to be made to unlimited lengths. Profiles of different curvature are readily produced by using interchangeable mandrels or travelling strips. The natural curvature of the profile is matched to the form to be wrapped, to avoid persistent strain and stress when mounted.
