Abstract
1396208 Isoprene SUN RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT CO 17 April 1973 [17 April 1972 (2)] 18424/73 Heading C5E [Also in Division C2] Isoprene is prepared by reacting methylal, CH 2 (OMe) 2 , with isobutene and/or butene-2 in the vapour phase in the presence of solid boron phosphate as catalyst. The reaction may be carried out at 150-450‹ C. A co-catalyst comprising MgSO 4 , BaSO 4 , PbSO 4 or Cu 3 (PO 4 ) 2 may be included in amount 1-25 wt. per cent of the total catalyst. The butene feed may be in the form of a C 4 -C 5 hydrocarbon mixture containing at least 5% isobutene.
