Abstract

1396156 Feeding webs DATA PRODUCTS CORP 7 June 1972 [18 June 1971] 26600/72 Heading B8R [Also in Division F2] A device for clamping web material 20 to limit or prevent its movement along a feed path includes a substantially planar electrical coil structure 42 including a coil (54), Fig. 2 (not shown), whose axis extends substantially perpendicularly to the plane of the structure, the latter being supported, e.g. by leaf springs 64, 66, for movement in a direction perpendicular to said path, a pressure plate 70, means for producing a magnetic field, e.g. permanent magnets 74, 76, 78, 80, and means to produce a current in the coil structure to move it towards the plate 70 to clamp the web and decelerate the structure to substantially zero velocity on its engagement with the plate 70. The device may be used upstream or downstream of a line printer 12, the web being fed by a pin belt 28 into a registered position before being clamped. A sensor coil 180 with its axis substantially parallel to the plane of the structure, may be fixed to the coil structure to produce a feed back signal for controlling acceleration and deceleration of the coil structure at the beginning and end of each clamp-release movement. Additionally it may control the clamping force which is dependent on a bias current. The plate 70 may be fixed or movable.
