Abstract

1396080 Purifying I C engine exhaust gases HOECHST AG 16 Aug 1973 [31 Aug 1972] 38736/73 Heading F1B Carbon monoxide and/or hydrocarbons in I.C. engine exhaust gas are oxidized by passage together with an oxygen containing gas, e.g. air, containing less than the amount of oxygen necessary for complete oxidation of the carbon monoxide or hydrocarbons over a catalyst containing copper oxide in a first reaction zone to effect partial oxidation of the carbon monoxide or hydrocarbons. The resulting gas together with added oxygen-containing gas containing more than the amount of oxygen necessary for complete oxidation of the carbon monoxide or hydrocarbons is passed over a further portion of the same copper oxide catalyst in a second reaction zone. The first and second zones may contain the same amount of catalyst and the oxygen-containing gas supplied to the first zone may contain between 30 and 90% of the oxygen necessary for complete oxidation of the carbon monoxide or hydrocarbons. The exhaust gas entering the first zone may have a temperature between 100 and 400‹C. The copper oxide catalyst may include an oxide of manganese and/ or nickel and/or cobalt and may be deposited on a barium aluminate and/or silicon dioxide and/or titanium chloride and/or aluminium oxide carrier.
