Abstract
1395456 Ignition systems TEXACO DEVELOPMENT CORP 19 April 1973 [19 June 1972] 19166/73 Heading F1B An ignition system providing controlled duration continuous-wave high frequency spark energy for the ignition of an internal combustion engine comprises an oscillator (not shown) for generating the spark energy and having a control winding (oscillator start stop winding) for starting and stopping oscillation thereof at the beginning and end of each spark interval, switching means 60 for instantaneously opening and closing a loading circuit for the control winding at the beginning and end of each spark interval and engine timed means 28 for actuating the switching means in predetermined relation to the engine operation as shown the switching means comprises an electronic switch (transistor 60) circuit means for connecting the engine timed means to the electronic switch and including a regenerative trigger means and time delay means for closing the electronic switch after a predetermined interval, if the engine timed means has stopped before the beginning and end of a spark interval. The time delay means comprises a retriggerable monostable multi-vibrator 41 and the circuit means also comprises a NAND gate 45 having at least two inputs one from the multivibrator and one from the trigger means and a circuit connection from the trigger means to an input of the multi-vibrator. As shown the engine timed means comprises an infrared light-emitting diode 29 a photo transistor 30 and a shutter 31 driven by the engine. In a modification the engine timed means comprises a contact breaker. In another modification the system includes a relay, an ignition switch and circuit means for connecting the relay to the control winding for stopping the oscillator whenever the ignition switch is turned off.
