Abstract

1395276 Automatic control of exhaust gases ROBERT BOSCH GmbH 26 Jan 1973 [10 Feb 1972] 4061/73 Heading G3R [Also in Division F1] The fuel/air ratio supplied to an internal combustion engine is regulated by the output of an integrating servo amplifier 10 whose direction of integration is changed by a threshold switch 11 in response to a signal from an exhaust gas measuring device 13. (12 is a pre-amplifier), and if no change is signalled for a time related to engine speed the time constant of the integrator is shortened. The operation is shown in Fig: 1, in which the upper line represents the measured variations in exhaust gas composition and hence fuel/air ratio about the desired value represented by the horizontal line and corresponding to the stoichiometric ratio. The resulting output of the integrating amplifier is shown as the lower line, the inclination of which changes at each crossing of the desired value. During a period such as a, a' e.g. during acceleration, no correction would be made, but the time constant is changed at b thereby producing the result shown dotted at c in a shorter time. The time constant is changed by a second threshold switch 16 triggered by the voltage on a capacitor 15 which is charged during the space between constant width pulses whose frequency corresponds to speed, from speed detector 17. Alternatively the pulses may be counted and the time constant changed after a predetermined count. Details of the circuits shown in Fig. 2 are given, Fig. 4 (not shown). They employ operational amplifiers and switching transistors. The servo-amplifier may adjust the air nozzle of a carburetter or the fuel injected in a fuel injection system.
