Abstract

1410463 Automatic control of exhaust gases ROBERT BOSCH GmbH 11 Jan 1974 [12 Jan 1973] 01488/74 Heading G3R In a system for regulating the fuel/air ratio supplied to an internal combusion engine in response to a measurement of its exhaust gases, the ratio being switched alternately between upper and lower values by a "threshold value switch", a timing element is arranged to impair the operation of the engine and/or give a warning if the period between switch operations exceeds a predetermined value. It is explained that failure of the exhaust gas probe would result in a too rich mixture and the object is to detect such failure and switch the mixture to "too lean" and/or give a warning. The voltage from the probe 1 is compared with a reference value from a Zener 11 in a bridge network connected to an amplifier 15 which saturates in a direction according to the error to turn on one or the other of transistors 21, 22. These apply a proportion of the supply voltage to an integrating amplifier 29 (whose time constant is adjusted by selector switch 27), the output of which adjusts the fuel/air ratio by unspecified means. At each negative switch over a monostable 37 is triggered. In the astable state 37 is blocked and a capacitor 44 is charged via 42, 43, and during the stable state 44 discharges through 45. Normally the charge on 44 is always sufficient to hold a switching transistor 49 conducting, but in the event of a fault 44 discharges enough to cause 49 to block which, via diode 54, switches the integrator 29 permanently to the weak condition. The action of the timer is inhibited by signals applied to terminal 52 e.g. during engine warm up.
