Abstract
139,514. Westinghouse Lamp Co., (Assignees of Rentschler, H. C.). Feb. 27, 1919, [Convention date]. Vacuum tubes; low-pressure metallic-vapour apparatus.-A tube having an electron-emitting cathode 5, a plate anode 4, and an intermediate grid 6, is filled with a medium such as argon or metallic vapour which exhibits the phenomenon of " resonance potential," the grid being maintained at a positive potential with respect to the anode and cathode. It is stated that the impact of primary electrons on gas particles is elastic or non-elastic, depending on the velocity of the electrons as determined by the potential of the grid, such primary electrons either passing through the gas particles to the grid, or rebounding, when the impact is elastic, or passing with reduced velocity when the impact is non-elastic; the latter phenomenon is termed " resonance " potential." In the case of argon at a pressure of a fraction of a millimetre to several millimetres, the phenomenon occurs with a positive potential of about 12.3 volts applied to the anode, the rate of change of the resultant anode current with increase of grid potential, being then zero. The tube may be used as a detector or amplifier of wireless signals, or as a frequency-doubler. Specification 15555/15 is referred to.
