Abstract
1394064 Retractive switches NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP 21 Dec 1972 [21 Dec 1971] 59469/71 Heading H1N A switch unit, suitable for use under a mat and of the kind which breaks a circuit when stepped on, comprises a metalleafspring 1 which in the unstressed condition has a bowed portion 2, a metal stud having a shank 6 which passes freely through a hole 3 in the bowed portion 2, a head 7 on the convex side of the bowed portion and larger than the hole 3, and restraining means co-operating with the stud and the ends of the bowed portion so that the bowed portion is held under stress by the head of the stud which thereby makes electrical contact with the leaf spring but is otherwise insulated therefrom. As shown in Fig. 1, a rigid insulating base 4 provides the restraining means, but in the embodiment of Fig. 3 a second leaf spring 10 acts against a second head 7a of the stud, which may be fixed in the insulating base 4 or pass freely through a hole 12, as shown. Several switch units may be assembled in series and enclosed in a p.v.c. envelope (30, Fig. 4, not shown). The insulating base member may be a flexible sheet (4a) of p.v.c. and may be heat sealed to the envelope (30). In a modification (Figs. 7 and 8, not shown) an even more flexible arrangement is disclosed wherein the base member is replaced by individual discs (45) of p.v.c. This allows the assembly to be formed into various shapes by pivoting about the studs, and the discs (45) may then be spot-welded to a plastics envelope sealing the whole switch. The springs and studs are of stainless steel, spring steel, or beryllium copper, and may be gold or silver plated at the contact areas.
