Abstract

1393943 Sampling metal MANNESMANN AG 26 May 1972 [26 May 1971] 25089/72 Heading G1B [Also in Division F4] A device for taking a sample from a metal bath of a converter comprises a heat transmissive crucible z having a partition 6 integral with a cover 7 and connecting pipe 8 for attaching the device to a lance. A thermally insulating cardboard sleeve 9 surrounds the pipe 8. The partition divides the crucible into two communicatling chambers 4 and 5, an inlet 18 and a length of aluminium wire 19 being disposed in one chamber, and a thermocouple 14 in the outer chamber. The partition has a tongue-shaped extension 11 which extends through the base of the crucible and is provided with a second thermocouple 15. Electrical leads 10 extend through the partition wall 6. In use, the device is mechanically lowered into the converter on a cooled lance pipe. The cover 17 melts allowing steel to enter the chamber 4 and flow past the aluminium wire 19 into the chamber 5. The thermocouple 14 measures the temperature within the crucible at the instant the sample is taken.
