Abstract

1393416 Chimneys IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 2 Aug 1973 [2 Aug 1972] 36012/72 Heading F4J A chimney 4 has, within its upper end and protruding from the mouth thereof, means 5, 6 for dividing a column of gas flowing up the chimney into a plurality of streams. The dividing means are such that they do not alter the columns direction of flow and the streams are discharged into the atmosphere at a plurality of heights. The dividing means may comprise two coaxial tubes 5, 6 as shown, or may comprise a single tube coaxial with the chimney, Fig. 1 (not shown); a tube attached to the internal wall of the chimney, Fig. 4 (not shown); or a pair of tubes side by side in and projecting from the chimney, Fig. 3 (not shown). The tubes may be of stainless steel. Examples of chimney cross-sections are circular and rectangular. The chimney may be used in apparatus for producing nitric acid.
