Abstract

1393312 Measuring acceleration electrically BECTON DICKINSON ELECTRONICS CO 27 Nov 1972 54639/72 Heading G1N [Also in Division H 1] A Piezo-electric crystal for an accelerometer comprises an annulus of a single crystal of the 3m class, the axis AA of the annulus being the z axis of the crystal. As shown the annulus 16 is disposed about a post 18 attached to a base 10 of the accelerometer. Electrodes formed by a layer of chromium and a layer of gold are provided on the cylindrical surfaces of the crystal, these being attached to the post 18 and an inertia member 70 respectively, which are electrically connected to an output connection 60. Accelerations along the AA axis produce shear stresses in the crystal giving rise to electrical signals amplified at 20 and recorded at 22. The 3m crystal materials specified are lithium niobate, lithium tantalate and tourmaline. A casing surrounding the accelerometer has holes 30 for the introduction of oxygen to prevent reduction of the crystal at high temperatures.
