Abstract

1393293 Electro-photographic plate VARIAN ASSOCIATES 5 April 1972 [5 April 1971(2)] 15720/72 Heading G2C An electro-photographic plate is made by forming on a substrate a mixture of flux, glass and preactivated photo-conductive crystals and heating the mixture to cause at least partial sintering of the crystals and melting of the glass together with the formation of conductive bridges between the crystals by recryatallization from solution in the flux. The substrate is preferably glass bearing a layer of tin oxide, chromium or gold while the crystals may be a sulphide, selenide, telluride or sulphoselenide of cadmium or zinc. The crystals are activated by firing a mixture of the crystals, a flux, e.g. a halide of Cd or Zn and an activator e.g. a halide of Cu or Ag in a closed container at 600‹C for 25 minutes. The fired material is ground, sieved and made into an aqueous slurry together with glass particles for the formation of electro-photographic plate. Additional CdCl 2 may be used as flux in the mixture. The slurry is milled before spraying on to the substrate. The plate is fired at 500 to 600‹C. Conductive paint may be applied to the edge of the fired plate to make contact with the conductive layer.
