Abstract

1391966 Valves C A BJORKLUND and A THOMASSON 13 June 1972 [22 June 1971] 27607/72 Heading F2V A water mixer includes a flexible reed arranged to control directly the flow from one or both of a pair of inlet ports to a common outlet port to determine the ratio of the hot and cold water flows, manual auxiliary adjusting means being provided for shifting the reed. In the Fig. 3, embodiment, bimetal reed 17 is adjustably anchored at an eccentric rubber block 19 and controls flow from inlet ports 2, 7, the free end of the reed extending through a rectangularsection orifice 16 in a restrictor 15 located upstream of mixers 30. The reed may also be under the control of indoor and/or outdoor thermostats communicating with chamber 27 behind a piston (or diaphragm) 24 having a rod 25 engaging the reed. Temperature adjustment may be made by adjusting the volume of the fluid link between chamber 27 and the thermostat(s). In a modification, the reed is not bimetallic and the mixing chamber connects with chamber 26 so that heat transfer across the piston can control the position of the reed. In Fig. 6, the external thermostat control is omitted and a bimetal reed 17 is anchored to the block 19 by a further reed 33. In another modification, a non-bimetallic reed of hair-pin shape is anchored to the housing at the free end of one limb and the other limb is controlled by a piston 24 as in Fig. 3, a stop screw being provided to abut the piston and limit maximum temperature. In the Fig. 1, embodiment, bimetallic reed 8 controls cold water inlet 6 and abuts adjustment screw 10.
