Abstract

1390914 Roadstone material; glass-ceramics NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP 16 June 1972 [29 June 1971] 30510/71 Headings C1J and C1M [Also in Division C3] Roadstone material comprises particles having a hardness of at least 8 mohs. and a defined spinel crystal structure dispersed in a softer glassy and/or crystalline matrix are produced by reacting blast furnace slag and pulverized fuel ash. MgO and Al 2 O 3 additives may be present. The spinel structure is defined as R<SP>II</SP>OR 2 <SP>III</SP>O 3 where R<SP>II</SP> is Mg, Fe or Zn and R<SP>III</SP> is Al, Fe, Cr or Mn), and/or the system or this latter system modified by the oxides of iron. In an example pulverized fuel ash and slag in the weight ratio 1 : 1 with 5 wt. per cent MgO is inserted in a furnace at 1400‹ C., the furnace temperature being raised to 1500‹ C. over ¢ hour and then cooled to 1000‹ C. over 24 hours.
