Abstract

1390859 Laminates GKN SANKEY Ltd 8 Aug 1973 [7 July 1972] 31905/72 Heading B5N A sheet moulding composition is produced by laying up a laminate having two outer layers and a core all formed from filaments by applying thermosetting material to the core and/or outer layers and consolidating the laminate thus formed, the filaments of each outer layer being longer than the filaments of the core and being in the form of a non-woven mat, in which the filaments are predominantly oriented in three mutually inclined directions parallel to the general plane of the laminate. The laminate may be produced by moving the outer layer mats, e.g. of glass filaments, downwardly in spaced relation and directing a supply of shorter filaments, e.g. glass fibres filled thermosetting material into the space between them, the resulting laminate being consolidated by passage between rollers optionally with the application of heat. Alternatively the outer layer mats may be impregnated with the thermosetting material by spraying or by passage through a bath of the material. In the outer layers one of the directions in which the longer filaments extend may be longitudinally, these filaments preferably being continuous, the other filaments lying obliquely to the length, e.g. at an angle of 45 degrees.
