Abstract

1390497 Copolymers of 1-olefin heat reaction products; enamels BERGER JENSON & NICHOLSON Ltd 8 March 1972 [15 March 1971 (2)] 6851/71 and 6852/71 Headings C3P and C3R Copolymers of (A) a heat reaction product of one or more normally liquid 1-olefins of 6-22 C atoms having a non-volatile content, determined at the mid-distillation point of the normally liquid 1-olefine or at 250‹ C., whichever is lower, of 1-60% by wt., and containing up to 10% by wt. of one or more free-radical-generating polymerization initiators, and (B) at least one other ethylenically unsaturated copolymerizable monomer, are claimed per se. (B) may be a vinyl aromatic, vinyl, vinylidene or allyl compound, a conjugated diene or an acrylic compound, Preferred copolymers are derived from 1-25% by wt. of (i) the heat reaction product (A), (ii) 5-25% of acrylamide, methacrylamide or hydroxyethyl or -propyl acrylates or methacrylates, (iii) 0-8% of ethylenically unsaturated mono- or dicarboxylic acid, and (iv) the balance of styrene, vinyl toluene or C 1 -C 10 aliphatic or cycloaliphatic monohydric alcohol esters of acrylic or methacrylic acid. The copolymers may be prepared by reacting the monomers in the presence of a free radical polymerization initiator added gradually during the course of the reaction. Specified acids are acrylic, methacrylic, itaconic, maleic and fumaric acids. Specified esters are methyl, butyl and 2-ethylhexyl acrylates. The initiator may be di-t.-butyl peroxide, cumene hydroperoxide or t. -butyl perbenzoate; and chain transfer agent, e.g. t.-dodecyl and lauryl mercaptans, may be present. The reaction may be effected in a solvent, e.g. xylene. The products may be mixed with crosslinking agents, e.g. urea, melamine- and phenol-formaldehyde condensates, alkylol alkyl melamines, polyepoxy compounds and polyisocyanate condensates, and pigments to give coating compositions. In examples 1- decene heat reaction products are copolymerized with hydroxypropyl methacrylate, styrene and (1 and 2) butyl acrylate and acrylic acid, and (3)2-ethylhexyl acrylate and methacrylic acid; 1-octene heat reaction product with (6) ethyl acrylate, acrylamide, maleic anhydride and styrene; and 1-hexene heat reaction product with (7) butyl acrylate, hydroxypropyl methacrylate, acrylic acid and styrene; and enamels are prepared by mixing products 1, 2 and 7 with butylated melamine-formaldehyde resin, epoxide resin, titanium dioxide, ethylene glycol monoethyl ether acetate, butanol and xylene; and product 6 with epoxy resin, titanium dioxide, butanol and xylene.
