Abstract
1390278 Detecting surface irregularities photo-electrically GEORG FISCHER AG 7 July 1972 [28 July 1971] 31922/72 Heading G1A Surface irregularities in plastics-covered cables are detected photo-electrically by monitoring the changes in detected intensity caused by changes in the angle of reflection at the cable surface. Between six and thirty arrangements of light source and photo-detector may be grouped around the axis of movement of the cable 2, on annular mounts 10, 11. The detectors which may be photo-cells or photo-resistors are interrogated in sequence and compared with a signal representing the sum of signals from the other cells divided by the number of cells. Alternatively, the light sources, which may be laser diodes, are sequentially pulsed. The indicator may be an optical or acoustic alarm to indicate faults above a pre-set limit. A recorder may also be provided. One of the supports 10 or 11 may be axially adjustable to deal with different cable diameters.
