Abstract

Seismic vibrations generated by a source are detected by geophones which are mounted in a symmetrical arrangement around a vertical axis with one geophone in the centre. This ensures identical coupling and allows computer processing to obtain directions of incident waves. Identical geophones (112-142) are mounted on a support (100) with a central face (110) and three side faces (120-140) which are identically inclined w.r.t. the central face to from supporting feet. A central hole (111-141) in each face allows the geophone to be mounted such tht their axes (123-143) meet at a point (0). This allows the absolute amplitude and direction of waves to be measured in horizontal planes while the geophone (112) mounted vertically senses their vertical components. This assembly may be connected in series with others to improve the data collected.
