Abstract

[Also in Division G1] The diameter of a fibre or wire is measured by directing a beam of monochromatic radiation on to the fibre to form a diffraction pattern and photo-electrically measuring the intensity of at least two portions of the pattern. A laser may be used to provide a coherent monochromatic beam 10 which is focused by lens 14 to form a diffraction pattern of the fibre 12 in a plane 18. A pair of adjacent photo-cells, connected in a differential arrangement, are located in a reference position several maxima away from the centre maximum 26. An increase (or decrease) in diameter of the fibre causes the selected maximum to move towards (or away from) the optical axis, resulting in a difference signal from the photo-cells indicating the sense of the diameter change. The output can control the rate of drawing of glass fibres when these are monitored by the apparatus. In an alternative arrangement, the photocells may be one on either side of the central maximum symmetrically disposed with respect to it. For large changes in diameter involving movement of a number of maxima at the detectors, counting circuitry may be provided. A number of fibres angled with respect to one another may be monitored, Fig. 3 (not shown), the mean diameter being measured. A movable photo-cell pair as in the Fig. 1 arrangement, or a pair of annular photo-cells, Fig. 3 (not shown), movable along the optical axis, may be used for this purpose. Alternatively a segment of the annular device may be used.
