Abstract

1389541 Drying of timber J H PLESS 12 June 1972 [16 June 1971] 28271/71 Heading F4G Lumber 1 is heated as it is continuously moved through a drying chamber 22, and the surface of the lumber 1 is moistened intermittently by contact with one or more freely rotatable wetting rollers 2 as the lumber 1 moves through the drying chamber 22. As shown, the roller 2 comprises a number of cylindrical sections 3 of spongy absorbent material, the shaft 4 being carried on bearings 5 on pairs of arms 9 linked by an apertured water pipe 6 and suspended from rollers 14. One of the arms 9 of each pair includes several bolt holes or a slot, and the angle between the arms 9 of each pair may be varied, so that the roller 2 exerts a slight pressure on the lumber 1. The water pipe 6 supplies water to the roller 2 under the control of a timer regulated by the temperature in the chamber 22, and is connected to a ram 12 which intermittently reciprocates the roller assembly across (or along) the lumber 1 under the control of a second timer. The periods of the timers may be varied to reduce the relative humidity as drying proceeds. The rollers may be wetted as they move over the lumber. The amount of water supplied to the rollers may be varied.
