Abstract

The wet surfaces 3 of automobiles are dried by contact with an absorbent material either in the form of a web 10, as shown, or as a covering for rollers 5 which material is urged into contact with the surface and has the adsorbed moisture removed by a squeeze roller 2, the expressed liquid being removed by a duct 8 beneath the point of pressure. The guide rollers 11, 12 for the web may be resiliently mounted, the web may be formed of several parallel strips, or a feeler roller may be mounted in engagement with the surface to control the position of the drying apparatus. In various other modifications, means for sensing the humidity of the dried surface may control relative movement between the absorbent material and automobile, means may be provided for premoistening the dry absorbent material prior to contact with the surface to enhance its absorption capacity, or means for cleaning the absorbent material after expression of liquid therefrom may be provided.
