Abstract

Machine guns.-Relates to automatic guns of the Vickers type in which the recoil action is pro. duced in part by the backward pressure of the cartridge upon the lock and in part by gas operation. According to the invention, the use of a muzzle attachment to effect the gas operation is avoided by surrounding the breech-end of the barrel by an adapter a having an adjustable bush c formed with a chamber or cylinder k to receive a grooved piston member g on the barrel. The gun gases enter the cylinder k through a passage h, and, after acting on the piston g, are exhausted through an aperture f and the hollow trunnions c. The bush c is adjustable to vary the recoil effect and is looked in position by a nut i. The adapter may be provided with a lubricating-ring, and the hollow trunnions permit of the circulation of air for cooling purposes.
