Abstract

1388581 Hop extracts HAG AG 2 June 1972 [3 June 1971] 25938/72 Heading C6E Air dry hops are extracted with a gas, at supercritical temperature and pressure, which comprises one or more of SF 6 , CHF 3 , CHF 2 Cl, CF 3 Cl, CF 2 CH 2 , C 3 F 8 , N 2 O, C 2 H 6 , C 2 H 4 or CO 2 , and the extract recovered by lowering the pressure to a subcritical value. All soft resins and essential oils but < 100% hard resins are extracted at 100-220 atmospheres gauge and further extraction of this product at 100-150 atmospheres omits some of the # acids. A second extraction with moist supercritical gas may be performed and the two extracts combined, or a water extract may be performed, the product being dried and mixed with that of the first extraction. A product of < 2% water is obtained if the temperature is maintained supercritical throughout the separation. Preferred temperature and pressure ranges, for the separation, are 40-50‹C and 150-400 atmospheres gauge.
