Abstract

1388142 Feeding and cutting webs; feeding sheets ING C OLIVETTI & C SPA 10 May 1972 [11 May 1971] 21924/73 Heading B8R Feeding webs.-A web roll 218, Fig. 2b and 4, is supported on rollers 281 between arms 222 which maintain it in a predetermined axial position. For accommodating rolls of various widths, the arms are connected to opposite runs of a cord 326 running over pulleys 328, so that if one arm is adjusted in one direction, the other moves in the opposite direction. Exhaustion of the web roll is detected by a sensor 224 pivoted on a shaft 276 carrying a cam 277 which on exhaustion locks micro-switches 286 to prevent operation of a cutter and feed means, and also produces an acoustic signal by inserting a striker 284 between a hammer 287 and a bell 288. Cutting webs-feeding sheets.-Originals to be fed to a copying machine are placed on a plate 205, Fig. 2a and introduced to continuously rotating rollers 211 which introduce them to the exposure station. As a sheet passes over the plate 205, it depresses levers 216, 215 in succession and then releases them, the effect being to energize an electromagnet, for feeding a copy web unwound from a roll by drive rollers 223 so that the web enters a cutting device, then to de-energize the magnet to stop the web feed and energize a second magnet ET, Fig. 5, to actuate the cutting device, and finally to de-energize the magnet ET. The cutting means comprises a helical cutting blade on a cylindrical cutting surface 226 rotatable by a shaft 227, and a straight counter-blade 228 resiliently biased into engagement with the cutting blade about a pivot shaft 229, the shafts 227, 229 being slightly slew with respect to each other to provide only a point contact between the blades. On energization of the magnet ET, a pull rod 237 releases a pawl 232 from a lever 231 connected to the cutting blade, whereupon a spring 233 rotates the lever and operates the cutting device. Near the end of the travel of the lever 231, a lug 401 thereon engages a lug 238 on a lever 235 to rotate the latter and allows a lever 234 to rock under the bias of the spring 233, thereby relaxing the spring, whereupon normally weaker spring 239 resets the cutting blade, so that a space is provided between the blades for receiving the next portion of the web. The copy web feed magnet also controls a mechanism (Fig. 6, not shown) which prevents operation of the cutting device under the control of the feed of a short signal at a time when the cut sheet would be too short to pass through the developer. There is also provided a device 263, 264, Fig. 5, whereby the cutting device is in any case operated when the web fed through the device has reached a predetermined maximum length, firstly to avoid exhaustion of the roll in the event of a malfunction of the cutter control by the original, and secondly to prevent the copy sheet from being too long for the developer, in the event of a long original. A manual control can be set so as to disable the copy web roll feed and to open a slot to allow the manual insertion of copy sheets by advancing along a plate below the plate 205.
