Abstract

1,169,564. Printing machines. BELL & HOWELL CO. 24 Oct., 1966 [24 Oct., 1965], No. 47586/66. Heading B6C. In a rotary printing machine for endorsing cheques a readily removable printing cylinder 12 is mounted on a rotatable stub shaft 13 and carries two identical plates 29, 30 such that two belt fed cheques are endorsed during each revolution, the operative half revolution for each cheque being initiated by a paddle-wheel detector device 32 which is pushed by the relevant cheque through one third of a revolution. This movement of the paddle-wheel is translated into actuation of a solenoid controlled clutch device 66 by an electrical control circuit whereby a continuously motor driven gearwheel 68, freely rotatable on the shaft 13, is caused to engage an element 70 fixed to the shaft to thereby rotate the cylinder. The latter is mounted on the stub shaft 13 from the free end thereof, a flnger-actuable pivoted lever 50 and spring-loaded detent 61 being mounted on the shaft at the free end to secure and release the cylinder at will. The cylindrical surface incorporates two flat portions 27, 28 whereby through operation of the electrical control circuit any particular cheque may be endorsed in any specified region.
