Abstract
1386784 Strengthening glass UNITED GLASS Ltd 19 July 1972 [19 April 1971] 9774/71 Heading C1M A glass article is strengthened by immersion in a fluidized bed, the fluidized material comprising a solid inert material and an active material at least a proportion of which is in vapour form at the bed temperature, the fluidized bed temperature being below the softening point of the glass but not less than 100‹ C. below the strain point, the article being brought to not more than 50‹ C. below the bed temperature before immersion, and causing the active material to react with the glass. The active material may be boric acid or an organic borate; or may be an ion-exchange material, e.g. CuCl, LiCl or KCl. The inert material, which preferably constitutes 90-99À9% by weight of the fluidized material, may be silicon carbide, tungsten, molybdenum, nickel, talc or zirconia. The active material may be coated on or mixed with the inert material. The fluidizing gas may be air, nitrogen, carbon monoxide or helium. Carbon may be mixed with the active material to maintain the gas non-oxidizing. The glass article, which may be a sheet or hollow, necked container, may be annealed after the strengthening.
