Abstract

1386545 Vehicle bumpers FIAT SpA and INDUSTRIE PIRELLI SpA 26 March 1973 [22 April 1972] 14477/73 Heading B7J A vehicle bumper comprises a pair of flexible hollow gas-filled tubular horizontal elements 7a, 7b connected by a pipe 8 having a throttle 9, the elements being encased in a cellular polyurethane shell 6a, 5b, 6a and 6b. Similar bumpers may be provided at each end of a vehicle and be connected by a pipe 13 for transfer of gas. In addition pipe 13 may be connected to two containers 14, 15 of the gas through throttles 18, 19. An impact against any element will be absorbed by transfer of gas to the other elements and the containers. In a modification each element may be replaced by a series of chambers interconnected by pipes having throttles. The elements may be made of a rubberized fabric.
