Abstract

1334598 Air cushion vehicles BERTIN & CIE 11 May 1971 [13 May 1970] 14266/71 Headings B7K and B7L A transport system comprises an overhead track 4 formed from a cylindrical tube 9 having a dependent fin 10, the track being supported on cantilever arms 6 fixed to posts 5, and a vehicle 1 suspended from carriages 2, 3 by resilient elements 11 and pivotally connected to each carriage by way of a pivot 13, each carriage being supported on the outer surface of the track by way of air cushions 7 formed between the track and deformable walls 18 and a rigid semi-cylindrical wall 17 secured to curved supporting arms 15, angular displacement of the vehicle about the longitudinal axis of the track being prevented by further air cushions 8 acting on the fin 10. Each vehicle is supported by two carriages 2, 3 each carriage being propelled by a linear motor 25 utilizing the fin 10 as armature. In an alternative embodiment the carriages are propelled by driven pinions which engage with a toothed rack on the track 4. In a further alternative pressurized air is passed through the tube 9 and emitted under the cushions 7 of the carriages 2, 3 by way of check valves. A skid 19 is provided to support the vehicle 1 when the air cushions 7 are inoperative.
