Abstract
1424744 Energy absorbers using elastomeric tori GENERAL TIRE & RUBBER CO 2 July 1973 [7 July 1972] 31342/73 Heading F2S An energy absorber for use as a dock fender or vehicle bumper mount comprises telescoping inner and outer tubular members 11, 12 and an elastomeric torus 24 between them, each tubular member having a seat portion 18, 20 for engaging the torus in the rest position (shown) of the energy absorber, and a non-tapered portion 17, 19 adjacent the seat portion-the torus 24 rolling between the portions 17 and 19 on impact (Fig. 2, not shown). The portions 17 and 19 are roughened to prevent the torus slipping. The maximum angle though which the torus rolls is 180 degrees. The torus is made of rubber or polyurethane with a Shore A hardness above 40. The torus is pre-compressed when engaged by the seat portions 18, 20. The tubluar members 11, 12 may have a circular or elliptical cross-section In Fig. 3 (not shown) the inner and outer members each have two seat portions, so that on impact two elastomeric tori are stressed in parallel. In Fig. 5 (not shown), the inner member has two seat portions, and there are two outer members each with a seat portion, two elastomeric tori being stressed in series on impact. A load-deflection graph (Fig. 6, not shown) is given.
